MARIPOSA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -
Firefighters are gaining an upper hand on a wildfire burning in Mariposa County.
As of Wednesday morning, the Gaines Fire had charred about 1,700 acres and was 75% contained.
The fire was reported just before 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Catheys Valley area, near Mount Gaines and Hornitos roads.
Cal Fire officials say a bird flying into power lines sparked the fire.
Families in the area of Corbett Creek were forced to leave their homes Tuesday afternoon, but were allowed to return hours later.
Officials say one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.
