FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -
It was a historic win for Fresno's Audra McDonald at the 66th annual Tony Awards Sunday night.
She won the Tony Award for best leading actress in a musical.
This makes McDonald the first African American woman to win five Tony Awards. This is her first as a leading actress.
She was considered the favorite for her powerful portrayal of Bess in "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess."
McDonald also has two Grammy Awards and two Emmy nominations.
She started here in Fresno at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater, first in the Junior Company, and then going on to play incredibly demanding roles like Evita.
She dedicated Sunday night's win to her daughter Zoey.
