FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -
A known gang member was shot and killed after police say he reached for a gun on the playground of a southeast Fresno elementary school.
It happened around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Aynesworth Elementary School located at corner of Church and Chestnut Avenues.
Police and paramedics did all they could to revive 29-year-old Jaime Reyes, but he died at the hospital.
Police Chief Jerry Dyer says officers had been looking for Reyes after they got a tip he stole a gun and a bulletproof vest from his family's home Tuesday night.
Dyer says Reyes was trying to sell the gun on the street when officers found him on the backside of the school.
Chief Jerry Dyer says, "At that time he jumped over the fence onto the school ground and the officers once again saw him reach into waistband and saw an object there that they believe to be a handgun."
An officer shot four times.
Police say the gun was found in his waistband, wrapped in plastic.
Police say they never would have fired if Reyes hadn't jumped the fence into a school full of kids and reached for the gun.
