1-Year-Old & 9-Year-Old Shot In Separate Tulare Shootings

TULARE, Calif. (KMPH) -

"It makes me so angry," Frances Reyes said.

Reyes has lived in her Tulare home for 40 years.

But on Wednesday night, her quiet neighborhood was shattered.

"We heard about three shots, we weren't sure if they were shots or not. But anyway we came out to the front," Reyes said. "We noticed some guy carrying out somebody."

Police say just after 9:45 p.m. several shots were fired into a home, just across the street from Frances.

One of the bullets ended up hitting a nine-year-old boy inside.

"This is only a block-long street. We don't have stuff like that happen to us, mostly it's just families and so forth. And then all the sudden, all this kind of crap is happening," Reyes said.

Not even an hour later there was more gunfire less than two miles away.

"They had this area taped off over here and then we heard the shots over there. And I thought, oh my gosh, not again," Reyes said.

"All the sudden I heard about four gunshots and cars speeding away," Anna, who lives across the street from the second shooting, said. "I called the cops right away because there was screaming; obviously somebody had got shot."

Anna went outside and saw the screaming was coming from the home on the corner.

Tulare police say a 20-year-old woman and one-year-old girl were standing outside the home when someone drove by in a car and started shooting, hitting the one-year-old in the leg.

"It's terrifying. It's really scary," Anna said.

"Stray bullets don't have no names. I have grandkids that play in my front yard, play in my backyard. They play with my next door neighbor's kids. And I fear for them," Dwayne Evans, Sr. said.

Police don't know yet if the shootings were related. And they aren't saying whether or not they know who is responsible. Neighbors are disgusted with the thugs who did it.

"Of course they're idiots; no regard for human life or human being," Reyes said.

"They're cowards," Evans said. "(They) do what cowards do, ride by and they shoot. They don't care what they hit. And nine times out of ten they're shooting at the wrong house anyway."

Both kids are expected to be ok.

The nine-year-old has been released from the hospital. His grandma tells KMPH News he's staying with her daughter now because he's too scared to come home.

Police say, although they don't know the motives yet behind the shootings, they don't believe the children were the intended targets.
