Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting At Fresno School

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Police continue to investigate a deadly officer-involved shooting at a school in Southeast Fresno.

The shooting happened shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday in a field at Aynesworth Elementary School, which is located at Chestnut and Church.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says officers received a tip about a gang member who stole a gun and bulletproof vest from his family's home and was trying to sell them on the street.

Officers found the man near the school and confronted him. Dyer says the gang member jumped over a school fence and pulled out a gun wrapped in plastic, which prompted an officer to open fire.

Police say the man was shot. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. His name has not been released.

The school was placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes.

According to Fresno Unified School District spokeswoman Susan Bedi, 185 students were on campus for after-school programs. When the shots were fired, teachers rushed the students into the cafeteria and kept the doors locked until police gave the all-clear, Bedi said.

An automated phone call will go out to all parents to let them know of the incident.
