FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -
A Fresno man is now the proud new owner of 29 ounces of pure gold valued at around $50,000.
All because he wanted to help a child heal.
It's the Children's Hospital Gold Treasure Giveaway.
KMPH teamed up with Fresno Coin Gallery, and we're excited to announce we've met our goal and raised $250,000 for Children's Hospital Central California.
Robert O'Brien of Fresno's ticket was pulled Sunday evening – the grand prize winner.
He wasn't in town when his name was called, but his heart was in the right place when he made a special trip to Fresno Coin Gallery last week, with a good gut feeling.
"I told my wife, it's time we're blessed with something. So I went over there and bought the ticket. I feel blessed. God's good that's about all I could say," said O'Brien.
Robert also has a special connection to Children's Hospital, he's been there several times.
"My niece Brittany, she passed away at the hospital. She had been suffering with mitochondrial disease and she spent several months a year in the hospital," said O'Brien.
Robert is friends with the MacGiggen family. Their daughter Skylar also has mitochondrial disease and thanks to the care she gets, she's planning to be a nurse when she grows up. She was part of Sunday's live show.
The fundraiser also helps patients like Phillip. He was born with half a heart.
He says he loves his doctor, because he makes him smile.
"He makes a bird out of his hand, and he tickles me," said Phillip.
The Gold Treasure Giveaway raised a quarter of a million dollars for the hospital, and that money goes straight to the bedside care of sick and hurt kids.
5,000 tickets were sold.
Children's Hospital Central California is the second largest children's hospital in California.
Every child who goes through its doors is treated regardless of whether or not they can pay.
