Chowchilla Suing High-Speed Rail Authority

CHOWCHILLA, Calif. (KMPH) -

The city of Chowchilla is suing the state's High-Speed Rail Authority. The lawsuit was filed in Sacramento Friday morning.

Two weeks ago, council members unanimously voted to pursue legal action against the authority because of concerns over the Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) regarding the Merced to Fresno section of the project.

According to a news release issued by the city, members raised questions on whether the EIR/EIS meets the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) or National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) adding they do not believe safety, impacts and mitigation issues were properly addressed.

Chowchilla Mayor Janan Hebert said, "Unfortunately, we believe this lawsuit is the only reasonable course of action to have our concerns addressed comprehensively. "

Specifically, the lawsuit calls on the authority to address impacts to school routes and farming.
