Scam Alert: Fake Debt Collectors Calling

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Federal Trade Commission is looking into a fake debt collection scam that's now made its way to the Valley.

Scammers tried to get Visalia resident Tim McNabb to send in hundreds of dollars.

Last year McNabb took out a "payday type" loan and paid it off, but lately he's been bombarded with calls claiming he still owes money.

It's become such a common occurrence that it's caught the attention of the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC says it's determined most of the calls are from India, and since January of 2010 the operation took in more than 5-million from victims.

Tim McNabb says, "They will threaten me with violence, and people need to know about this...they claim to be a police officer saying they are going to send someone to your house to arrest you.

The FTC says legitimate debt collectors must provide consumers with both written information about the debt and instructions for protecting themselves.
