A Valley boxer will be heading to London this summer to compete in the Olympics
Even though his amateur record is better than the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, Avenal native Jose Ramirez resisted the temptation to turn pro so he could continue his pursuit of an Olympic gold medal.
On Wednesday, a major part of that dream was fulfilled. Ramirez will get his chance.
The 19-year-old Fresno State student easily won a qualifying bout on points in Rio de Janeiro, clinching a spot in the competition for Team USA at the Summer Games in London.
Ramirez had already earned a place on the team during the Olympic trials, but needed this win to make sure he would actually be able to fight in the Games.
