Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) May 08, 2012
As part of its Big Screen Classics series, The Lensic Presents a kickoff to summer June 1 and 2 with an Indiana Jones weekend featuring the first two movies in the successful franchise: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). The Lensic is a Featured Business on Santa Fe, New Mexico, visitor guide SantaFe.com.
Two evenings of action and adventure (and snakes!) with the archeologist Indiana Jones is a perfect way to start off the summer for kids, families and those of us who want to beat the heat and the typical summer offerings at the multiplex. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by George Lucas, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was conceived on the heels of the successes of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (Spielberg) and "Star Wars" (Lucas). A critical and popular success, the movie was the top grossing film of the year. It also made Harrison Ford, already a cultural hero due to his role as Hans Solo in "Star Wars" and "The Empire Strikes Back", a huge star.
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" introduces us to the archeologist, Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr. PhD, who is assigned by the U.S. government to locate the lost Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis do. The year is 1936. With the help of an old flame, Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), Indy discovers the Ark in Egypt but is pursued by the Nazis, led by his nemesis, Dr. René Belloq. Kidnapping by the bad guys, close encounters with snakes and lots of hand to hand combat ensues.
Set in 1935, the darker "Temple of Doom" (1984) was created as a prequel to "Raiders." After escaping Chinese gangsters with the help of a singer and actress, Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw), Indy stumbles upon an Indian village under the power of a cult leader, Mola Ram (Amrish Puri). It’s up to Indy, Willie and their twelve-year-old sidekick, Short Round, to rescue the village children kidnapped by the evil cult leader. In the mix are the holy Sankara Stones, desired by all for their power.
The Big Screen Classics series is part of Lensic Presents, a program of the Lensic Performing Arts Center created to bring diverse and affordable programming to Santa Fe. Big Screen Classics are sponsored by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.
