Officer-Involved Shooting In Fresno Leaves One Dead

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Fresno police shot and killed a man armed with a screwdriver.

The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon around 3:30, near Peach and Olive, just south of the Fresno airport.

Fresno police tried to revive the man, but despite their efforts he died at the hospital.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says it all began when a woman flagged down an officer. The woman claimed a man was acting weird and tried to get in her car. The officer spotted the guy described by the woman in the street.

Chief Dyer says the man was carrying a screwdriver and came at the officer, and that the officer tried to shock the guy with a stun gun. But he didn't stop, and that's when the officer was forced to use his gun; he shot it five times.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says, "At some point the officer was back peddling to get away from the suspect and fell to the ground. We're just not sure if that was before he fired his weapon or after."

As police were investigating the shooting, a number of nearby residents were outraged.

Many claim the man had his arms in the air, as if he was giving up.

Chief Dyer says the department is investigating.
