Do's And Don'ts During A Tornado

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Valley isn't close to becoming Tornado Alley. But when you heard the emergency weather alerts about a possible funnel cloud Wednesday, did you have a clue what to do?

California averages four tornadoes per year, but when it happens near your home there's no time to waste to stay safe. If you wind up in the path of a tornado here's what to do.

If you're in a house, dorm or an apartment stay away from windows. Go to the center of a small room. Crouch down as low as possible and cover your head with your hands. A bathtub can offer protection but cover yourself with thick padding or blankets.

If you're in an office building, stay away from windows and stay off elevators. Interior stairwells are good places to take shelter.

If you live in a mobile home get out immediately even if it is tied down.

In a car or truck they are extremely risky in a tornado. But if you're out in the middle of nowhere put your head down below the windows and cover your head with a coat or blanket.

The largest tornado to strike Fresno was an F2 that hit near the airport back in 1980. No one was killed but one person was hurt.
