The Mountain West and Conference USA will dissolve and form a new athletic conference which will include Fresno State.
The yet-to-be named conference will include from 18 to 24 schools, beginning competition in all sports in 2013.
There will be east and west divisions, with a semifinal playoff in football leading to a conference championship game. There will also be a conference championship tournament in basketball and crossover games.
The western schools are Fresno State, Air Force, Colorado State, Hawaii, New Mexico, Nevada, UNLV and Wyoming. At this point, Hawaii will compete in football only.
The eastern schools are East Carolina, Marshall, Rice, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, Tulsa, Alabama-Birmingham and UTEP.
It is possible Western Athletic Conference schools Louisiana Tech, San Jose State and Utah State could also be invited to join.
Conference officials hope to work out the details over the next six months.
