MERCED, Calif. (KMPH) -

A man has been arrested after Merced Police say he drove a stolen truck through a park and crashed into a fence at a police station.

It all started just before 10 a.m. Tuesday when Amtrak Police called Merced police officers to tell them that a man had just stolen a train passenger's bag, Lt. Tom Trinidad said.

Officers received a description of the suspected thief's truck and searched the area.

Police say they spotted the man -- later identified as Ronnie Chestnut -- in the 1100 block of K Street. They say he tried to get away from officers by driving through McNamara Park.

Chestnut ended up crashing into a fence at the police department's south station, Trinidad said.

Police say the truck had been reported stolen earlier in the day.

Chestnut was arrested and taken to the Merced County Jail.
