44 Roosters Put Down After Cockfighting Bust

Posted:
KINGS COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

Authorities say more than 40 roosters found during a cockfighting bust in Kings County have been euthanized.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday, sheriff's deputies went to a home in the 9200 block of Houston Avenue, near Hanford, after receiving a call about a fight.

They pulled up and saw several people running away.

Deputies say they went into the backyard and discovered a makeshift cockfighting ring.

Kings County Animal Services was called in to check on 44 roosters. Officials said all of the birds had to be put down because they had been bred to fight.

Deputies believe the roosters might have been injected with steroids.

More than 20 people were detained for questioning.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (559) 852-2720.
