FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -
It's been two months since it last snowed in the Shaver Lake area. November 20th to be exact. But the wait is over. It finally looks like winter at 5,000 feet.
Deer were jumping for joy in the wilderness. A party of four was prancing on the fresh coat of white powder. Seconds later a couple of slowpokes hurried across the road to catch the crowd.
The sound of a snow blower was something that locals and visitors to Shaver Lake haven't heard for weeks. Business was brisk Saturday morning at Shaver Lake Sports according to cashier Emily Falk. "Some clothes, snow boots, a lot of gloves. A lot of snow park passes. People like to play in the snow."
Michelle Cook's family started tossing snowballs while she tried to figure out how to put on snow chains. This is the first time Tavian Ball has touched snow. "It's way better than movies. Why is that? You're in it." The kids let the snow balls sail and mom never did figure out those chains.
The Caltrans snow plow finally got in a little road work after sitting idle since November. Back at the village, Mike Karkapus, a local for 20 years, said it's time to get his van's tires outfitted for winter. "It looks like it might start snowing for a while. So I'm okay until about a foot of snow then I need chains."
