Bears Released In The Sierra: Mother Shot By Poacher

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

Two orphan bear cubs were released back into the wild Tuesday afternoon, right in our backyard.

The California Department of Fish and Game released the black bear cubs in an undisclosed area of the Eastern Sierra of Fresno County.

The 6-month-old brothers, named Teddy and Bear, had a rough beginning.

Some hikers found them last August after their mother was illegally killed by a poacher.

More importantly they were never associated with humans, which made them excellent candidates to be released.

For the past five months the cubs were staying at the only bear rehab center in the state, in South Lake Tahoe.

Fish and Game personnel are still studying the survival rate of rehabilitated bears, so the duo was tagged with a GPS monitor.

Prior their release, the cubs were sedated, and given a medical check up.

From all of us at KMPH, Teddy and Bear, good luck.
