WOODLAKE, Calif. (KMPH) -
A camp where at-risk kids in Tulare County ride horses, play games and learn about staying in school could lose the money it gets from the city.
Dozens attended Monday night's Woodlake City Council meeting to speak out about rumors the council would cut funding.
The camp is called Camp Zap after Woodlake Police Chief John Zapalac who runs it.
Chief Zapalac tells KMPH News he's asking the city for $300. It's gas money to bus hundreds of kids up to his Lemon Cove ranch.
The chief says this is the 13th year he's put on the camp and has seen juvenile crime in the area drop by half.
"It's probably 75% non-city, and then the 25% I'm giving the city credit for is in the form of the two officers' wages who are school officers assigned to this kind of activity...and a tank of gasoline," Chief Zapalac said.
Woodlake's City Council decided it needs more information before making a decision. The council plans to make it next month.
