Low Snow In Yosemite Means Rare And Beautiful Sight

Posted:
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (KMPH) -

This is Tenaya Lake deep in Yosemite's high country. Frozen over.

"It's like the craziest thing I've ever seen. Tons of water frozen," Caleb Overton laughs.

Usually you can't even get up here this time of year.

Emily Ke points out, "Usually this is snow. Six feet of snow."

Not this year.

John Appel says, "There's a little snow, but they kept the road open so its nice to be able to come up here and see this all frozen."

And see Yosemite's granite peaks under a winter haze. Even Half Dome looks cold. But it's Tenaya's frozen water that tempts people from the shoreline.

The ice is nearly clear. Thick. You can see chunks on top. And along the shore. But that didn't stop brothers from playing hockey. Or little girls from trying new tricks. Or dads dusting off their skating skills.
