A bystander was hit and killed Sunday after being caught up in a high-speed chase in south Fresno.
It happened shortly after 3 p.m. on the southbound Highway 99 off ramp to Jensen Avenue.
CHP Officers say a Dodge Charger they were chasing lost control and crashed into a panhandler who was standing on the side of the off ramp.
An ambulance took the panhandler to the hospital, but he later died.
The driver of the Dodge, 20-year-old Javier Jardon, was arrested on various charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, evading arrest and driving while suspended for DUI.
The CHP says an officer tried to pull the Dodge over after it didn't stop for a stop sign.
After crashing into the homeless man, the Dodge then crashed into a Chevy pickup, investigators say. The driver of that truck was not hurt.
Authorities say Jardon tried to run away after the crash, but officers were able to take him into custody. Three other people in the car were also arrested.
The victim's name has not been released.
