Visalia Police have identified the man who they say shot and killed a Mormon Bishop over the weekend.
Officers say 47-year-old Kenneth James Ward of Modesto entered the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Tulare St. Sunday, and asked to speak to the Bishop. When 42 year-old Bishop Clay Sannar became available, Ward shot and killed him.
Following the shooting, Ward took off. He later called police from a payphone, telling them of the incident, and where they could find him.
When officers surrounded Ward's vehicle on corner of Divisadero and Burrel, they say he opened his door and started shooting, forcing them to return fire.
Ward was shot in the gunfire and taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Police say at this time no motive has been determined for the shooting.
The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave.
