Water Crisis Town Hall Meeting Held At World Ag Expo

Posted:

A town hall meeting will be held at the World Ag Expo on Thursday to discuss the current water crisis, and recent decisions which have affected it.

The Pacific Legal Foundation is sponsoring the forum, to address the unprecedented water shortages in the San Joaquin Valley.

The forum will be held at 1 p.m. at the Heritage Center on the Ag Expo grounds.

The meeting comes just one day after a federal judge in Fresno made a ruling, which some valley farmers claim have put Westside farms back at square one in their battle for more water.

On Wednesday, Federal Judge Oliver Wanger denied an emergency request for a temporary restraining order to keep water flowing for the benefit of West Valley farms.

The decision was made after federal biologists claimed six pumps at the Delta killed some Delta Smelt; a fish that's listed as an endangered species.

Wanger said he had no choice but to re–impose pumping restrictions.

The pumps had been working at full capacity, after Wanger ruled last week to lift restrictions for two weeks to protect native salmon.

Farmers had hoped that decision would have provide a steady flow, that could have been stored in the San Luis Reservoir.

Farmers throughout the valley say the water crisis had led them to leave a quarter-million acres of land idle; and thousands without work. Some cities have even reported unemployment rates as high as 40%.
