FRESNO - Just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, a witness flagged down a Fresno police car that happened to be driving by a home on East McKinley in Fresno.
Sheriff's deputies say the 32 year old man behind the wheel of a red SUV had been driving erratically, including heading eastbound into oncoming westbound traffic.
He finally crashed onto the home's front yard, then rammed into the minivan in the driveway over and over again.
"The officer ordered the subject to get out of the car numerous times. At that point there was a shooting, an officer-involved shooting," Deputy Chris Curtice said.
Investigators say the officer, who is described as a sergeant on the force, drew his weapon and shot the man, but they're not saying much about what the man did to cause the officer to feel threatened enough to fire.
"Assisting officers who came on scene moments later assisted the initial officer in performing CPR until EMS arrived," Curtice said.
The man was taken to community regional medical center where he died.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says the man was not targeting the house or anyone in it.
The chief also says he had an extensive criminal record.
"He has been to prison, appears to be on parole at this time, and perhaps there's a warrant that is out for his arrest," Dyer said.
The investigation is being handled by the Sheriff's Office.
More information as to the identity of the dead man is expected Wednesday.
