Valley School Is The Class Of Lacrosse

Fresno's Hoover High School has taken its lacrosse program to the highest level.

The Lady Patriots are heavy favorites to win the upcoming Fresno Unified postseason tournament, which would be their fourth championship in a row.

Built from the ground up by head coach Tim Carey, Hoover has never lost a league contest.  The Lady Pates are in their fourth season of play, rolling to a 54-0 record in league games.

Legendary Coach Reacts To NCAA Snub

Fresno State head softball coach Margie Wright believes her team should have received an at-large invitation to the NCAA Regionals.

When the Bulldogs were not invited, it ended Fresno State's record streak of having competed in every NCAA Regional since the event began in 1982.

It also ended Wright's 27 year run as head coach at Fresno State. She announced her retirement last week.

Late Rally Lifts Grizzlies Past Iowa

The Fresno Grizzlies scored three runs in the eighth inning and three more in the ninth Wednesday night for a thrilling 8-7 victory over Iowa.

The visiting Cubs had taken a 7-2 lead with a six run rally in the top of the eighth inning before the Grizzlies roared back. Todd Linden capped the comeback with a two run double in the bottom of the ninth, ending Fresno's two game losing streak.

The Grizzlies improve to 24-9, the best record in the PCL.

Hibernating Grizzlies No Match For Cubs

The Fresno Grizzlies took their lumps Tuesday night, opening a Pacific Coast League homestand with a 13-2 loss to the Iowa Cubs.

It was a rough night for Fresno's starting pitcher Eric Hacker. He entered the game with a record of 5-0. But Hacker was knocked out of the game in the fifth inning after giving up nine earned runs on nine hits.

Rule Could Bring Free Agency To High School Sports

The CIF has approved a controversial transfer rule that will make it easier for student-athletes to change high schools. 

The old rule forced student-athletes to sit out one year of competition after transferring to another school unless their entire family moved, or they got a hardship waiver.

Under the new rule, a student-athlete can transfer without a family move, and must sit out only the first 30-35 days of any sports season.

Bees Sting Grizzlies In Homestand Finale

The Salt Lake Bees beat the Grizzlies Thursday night, 5-3, ending Fresno's five-game Pacific Coast League winning streak.

Ryan Langerhans opened the scoring for Salt Lake in the top of the first inning with a three-run homer off of Andrew Kown. It was the first home run Kown had allowed all season.

Charlie Culberson hit his second homer in as many games for Fresno in the bottom of the inning, but the Grizzlies never caught up.

Lorenzo Neal Reacts To Death Of Junior Seau

Friends, family, and law enforcement are all looking for answers in the wake of the death of former NFL superstar Junior Seau of an apparent suicide.

The 43-year-old was found in his home with a gunshot wound to his chest. A handgun was near the body.


While he left no suicide note, Seau's ex-wife says she and other family members received a text message from Seau that only said, I love you.

Fresno Christian's Trevor York has the highest batting average of any high school baseball player in the state of California.

Entering Tuesday's action, the third baseman was batting .677. York then had five hits in seven at-bats during a doubleheader sweep of Tranquillity, raising his batting average to .684.

Pitching Powers Fresno State Past Cal Poly

The Fresno State baseball team rallied for a 3-2 non-conference win over Cal Poly Tuesday night at Beiden Field.

Bulldogs' head coach Mike Batesole threw six pitchers at the Mustangs, and it paid off.

Fresno State rallied from a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and another in the seventh to sweep the season series with Cal Poly.

The Bulldogs, now 17-20, return to WAC play Friday night against Sacramento State.

Saints Or Sinners? NFL Team Accused Of Eavesdropping

The New Orleans Saints are denying a report general manager Mickey Loomis had his suite at the Superdome wired so he could listen in on the conversations of the opposing team's coaches during NFL games.

ESPN cited an anonymous source for the story, adding the practice went on for three years before the system was dismantled because of damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Loomis is already under NFL suspension for the Saints' bounty scandal.

The Fresno Grizzlies scored eight runs in the seventh inning Thursday night on their way to a 10-8 Pacific Coast League victory over Reno.

If he chooses to leave the Bulldogs, Saunders cannot go to any school in the Mountain West Conference or to three other schools determined, but not disclosed, by head coach Tim DeRuyter.

Saunders, who led Fresno State in receiving yards and touchdowns last season, reportedly is unhappy with his role in the Bulldogs' new spread offense.

All-Western Athletic Conference receiver Jalen Saunders wants to leave Fresno State and transfer to another school.

Saunders, who will be a junior next season, was the Bulldogs' second-leading receiver in terms of catches last season with 56. But he was number one by a wide margin in receiver yards, over 1,000, and in touchdowns with 12.

Former Fresno State head men's basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian is scheduled to be released from a Las Vegas hospital on Friday.

The 81-year-old legend was hospitalized nearly two and a half weeks after suffering a mild heart attack.

When he continued to have trouble breathing, it was discovered Tarkanian was also suffering from bronchitis.

After ripping a dozen hits off of losing pitcher Michelle Moses in the opener, the Rebels pounded out 17 hits in game two which was shortened to six innings by the mercy rule. Kiley Shae Aldridge didn't make it out of the first inning and took the loss in the nightcap.

Washington Union High School pitcher Kyle Cardoza threw a no-hitter as the Panthers beat Dinuba, 7-1 Tuesday night in the championship game of the Fowler Easter Baseball Tournament.

Washington Union put six runs on the board early and Cardoza, a junior lefthander, did the rest. He was named the top pitcher in the tournament.

In the consolation game, Fresno Christian remained unbeaten with a dramatic 7-6 come-from-behind win over Kingsburg.

Matt Cain is now the highest-paid right handed pitcher in the history of baseball. Cain has agreed to a contract extension with the Giants. His new deal will pay him $127.5 million over the next six years.

Moses Leads Fresno State To Sweep Of BYU

Senior Michelle Moses did it all for Fresno State Friday night in a doubleheader sweep of Brigham Young.

Moses pitched a complete game, three hitter with eight strikeouts on the way to a 3-1 victory in game one. Courtney Moore homered and Maria Sio added a two run single to provide the offense.

Then in game two, Moses belted her team leading 13th home run of the season and Moore added her second of the night as the Bulldogs held on for a wild 10-9 win.

Pro football scouts representing 15 NFL teams were in Fresno Wednesday, running 14 Bulldogs' seniors through their paces.

The athletes were tested for strength, agility and speed as scouts compiled their evaluations for next month's NFL Draft. Some had a chance to raise their stock, while others hoped to impress enough to land free agent contracts.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will soon have a new owner. An agreement is in place to sell the legendary franchise to a buying group that includes former Lakers star Magic Johnson for $2 billion.

Wiggins Leaving Bulldogs For Ole Miss

Adrian Wiggins, who has led the Fresno State women's basketball team to five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, is leaving the Bulldogs to take over as head coach at Ole Miss.

Wiggins will be officially introduced at a news conference in Oxford on Wednesday.

Wiggins took over at Fresno State late in the 2005 season after Stacy Johnson-Klein was fired and won five WAC regular season or tournament championships.

Jerry Tarkanian Suffers Mild Heart Attack

Former Fresno State head basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian suffered a mild heart attack Tuesday in Las Vegas.

According to reports, Tarkanian began wheezing during a routine doctor's visit and was taken to Mountain View Hospital, where an EKG revealed he was suffering a heart attack.

The 81-year-old legend was said to be joking after he was taken to intensive care, but he admitted he was scared. Tark was resting comfortably Tuesday night.

Tom Seaver To Be Honored In Fresno

Baseball Hall of Famer Tom Seaver is expected to be honored in his native Fresno during next year's annual Hot Stove Gala.

Seaver starred at Fresno High School, then went on to Fresno City College and the University of Southern California before signing with the New York Mets as a first round draft pick.

He was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1967, and a 12-time All-Star in his 20 Major League seasons.

Fresno State women's lacrosse is still looking for the first victory in the history of the program after losing to the University of New Hampshire Wednesday, 19-7.

It was the home opener for the Bulldogs, who got two goals from Taylor Fiehler.

This is the fourth season Fresno State has fielded a team. The Bulldogs are 0-2 this year, and their all-time record is 0-44.

The Fresno State women's basketball team will play Georgetown in round one of the NCAA Tournament.

The game will be played Sunday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Bulldogs are in the Des Moines Region, which includes Baylor. The Bears are 34-0 and ranked number one in the nation.

Georgetown is currently ranked 15th, with a record of 22-8.

This is Fresno State's fifth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Fresno State women's basketball star Ki-Ki Moore has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year in voting by the league's coaches.

Bulldogs Rosie Moult and Taylor Thompson, were selected to the second team.  Moult and Thompson were also named to the All-Defensive team.

Former Hanford High School star Madison Parrish was named to the All-Freshman Team.

New Era Begins For Fresno State Football

The Fresno State football team opened spring practice Tuesday under first time head coach Tim DeRuyter.

It was the first of 15 sessions, culminating with the annual spring football game at Bulldog Stadium on March 25th.

DeRuyter replaces Pat Hill, who was let go after 15 seasons as Fresno State's head coach.

Hoover, Clovis East Win Playoff Openers

The Hoover High School boy's basketball team opened the Valley playoffs Tuesday night by rolling to a 77-50 victory over the Delano Tigers in Division III.

The Patriots have won 11 in a row.

The only game in Division I had Clovis East hosting rival Clovis in a matchup that went to the wire.

The Timberwolves needed a putback basket at the buzzer by Nathan Amundsen, son of head coach Tim Amundsen, to eliminate the Cougars, 73-71.

Sophomore Tyler Linehan was named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball magazine.

'Dogs Survive A Scare, Rally To Beat Idaho

The Fresno State women's basketball team, in first place in the Western Athletic Conference, beat Idaho Thursday night, 76-68, to run its winning streak to ten games.

But it was not easy. The Bulldogs blew a 16 point first half lead and fell behind briefly in the second half before regaining control.

Kiki Moore led Fresno State with a game high 23 points. Taylor Thompson scored 15, while Rosie Moult added 13.

Ram Tough! FCC Fights Off Upset-Minded West Hills

The Fresno City College men's basketball team held off West Hills Wednesday night for a tough 74-65 victory.  The Rams used a 10-0 scoring run to snap a 20-20 first half tie, and held on for the nine-point win.

It was the 13th consecutive victory for the Rams, who have also won 20 of their last 21 games.

Fresno City College will host Columbia Saturday night in the final game of the regular season.

Payback! Bullard Ends Memorial's Perfect CMAC Season

The Bullard High School boy's basketball team got revenge for its only County Metro Athletic Conference defeat of the season Tuesday night, beating San Joaquin Memorial, 75-68.


It ends the Panthers' ten-game winning streak that had included a 66-65 victory over the Knights on January 26th.

Bullard and Memorial are now tied atop the CMAC at 8-1.

Fresno State To Be Part Of New Super Conference

The Mountain West and Conference USA will dissolve and form a new athletic conference which will include Fresno State.

The yet-to-be named conference will include from 18 to 24 schools, beginning competition in all sports in 2013.

There will be east and west divisions, with a semifinal playoff in football leading to a conference championship game.


Conference officials hope to work out the details over the next six months.

The Fresno Christian High School boy's basketball team had a 19-game winning streak put to the test Friday night.  The Eagles, with an overall record of 20-1, had to come from behind to beat West Sequoia League rival Caruthers in an overtime thriller, 59-56.

Meanwhile, there was an upset in the Tri-River Athletic Conference.  Clovis West manhandled rival Buchanan in a 58-37 rout.  That drops the Bears into a first place tie with Central in the TRAC.

The Fresno Christian High School boy's basketball team rolled to it's 19th win in a row Tuesday night, taming the Tigers of Tranquillity, 85-52.

The reigning Division V Valley champion Eagles are 20-1 overall, 6-0 in the West Sequoia League.

The Bullard Knights battered Sunnyside, 77-25, improving to 23-3 overall and 6-1 in the County Metro Athletic Conference.

Bullard has beaten its last three opponents by an average score of 76-22.

Anxious to put last year's 4-9 record behind them, the Bulldogs are anxious to start spring football practice.

Running back Robbie Rouse is looking forward to learning the new spread offense of first year head coach Tim DeRuyter.  Rouse admits practicing Fresno State's old offensive scheme did become boring at times.

Quarterback Derek Carr is also ready to go, saying he will give it everything he has.

The Central High School basketball team ended the ten-game winning streak of top-ranked Buchanan Friday night, beating the Bears, 65-58.

The Grizzlies, who lost to Buchanan in their first meeting, have not lost since, running off a five-game winning streak to get to 5-1 in the TRAC.

Meanwhile Fresno Christian is riding an 18-game winning streak. The Eagles are 19-1 after a 65-55 win at Riverdale.

Tuesday was a good night for several Valley high school basketball teams. Buchanan ran its winning streak to ten with a 51-45 TRAC victory over Clovis North.

San Joaquin Memorial beat Edison 64-43 to improve to 5-0 in the CMAC. 

Hoover is 5-0 in the NYL thanks to a tight 56-50 victory over McLane.  

Fresno Christian rolled over Parlier 56-42. The Eagles are 18-1 with a 17-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs have a chance to get off to a fast start, playing their first ten games at home.
