Murder-Suicide in North Fork

North valley detectives are investigating the shooting deaths of two people in North Fork, on Sunday night.

The Madera County Sheriff's Department says the double shooting happened around 3p.m. on Sunday afternoon, near Road 274 and 225.

They say it appears a woman in her 40's shot and killed a man in his twenties, then turned the gun on herself in an apparent murder-suicide.

Authorities say the two were possibly related, as aunt and nephew. Now they're searching for a motive behind this family tragedy.

"There's not a killer on the loose running around in the community. We have every indication that this is a murder-suicide and it ends here. Now we're looking for the cause, why would someone shoot someone else then commit suicide," said Sheriff John Anderson.

Authorities say they will not release the identities of the victims until the family members are notified. Sheriff Anderson says this is difficult because extended family members are now traveling aboard.

The sheriff says murders are extremely rare in North Fork, and there have been two in the last 25 years.
