Students Organize Protest in Support of Gay Marriage

Posted:

Students and supporters spoke out in support of gay rights in Northwest Fresno on Saturday.

Nearly one-hundred people turned out to the "No on Prop 8" rally on Blackstone and Nees.

The protest was organized by two students at Clovis High School who didn't expect the large crowd.

"We were in class on Monday and started talking about how all you see are the 'Yes on Prop 8' signs and we noticed how wrong that was and organized this. We just thought eight students were going to show up but almost 90 people are here," said Natalie Compton.

The seniors say they aren't just in support of gay marriage but equality for all Americans.

"I'm a Republican and I'm straight but I still think we shouldn't be overruling something that out government already voted 'yes' on so we shouldn't take something away already granted," said Compton.

The senior said she believes a lot of people in Fresno are in support of the measure, because they received a lot of support from drivers passing by.

This is just one of the demonstrations regarding proposition 8, there have been pro and anti-protest in the South and Central Valley so far.

Residents say they believe we will see more demonstrations as November 4th approaches.

If approved in November, Proposition Eight would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry, it would also change the California Constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and woman in the state.

The measure was submitted for the ballot by petitioners with the "California Marriage Protection Act.
