Biking More And Driving Less: The Recipe For Savings

An increasing number of cyclists are on the roads across the nation.

Ben Medrano of Rubber Soul Pro-Bicycle shop in Fresno says many of his customers have recently started biking everywhere, some, totally eliminating their cars from daily life.

Medrano let us in on a little secret; you can get a brand new bike for just a couple hundred bucks.

"You can buy a bike for $300.00 that has fenders, a rack, a bell, a lock with it" says Medrano.

There's many reasons why people won't commit to biking around town, mainly the lack of space for items.

But times have changed and now companies are making commuter specific bikes that include racks, baskets in the front for carrying your lunch and racks in the back for saddlebags for laptops.

For those of you worried about the dirt factor, most bikes come armed with fenders which offers protection from mud and roadside trash.

There's no immediate solution for the pain we're feeling at the pump but bikers like Medrano will tell for every car we replace with a bike on roads across the country, our environment will benefit.

"Obviously paying $5.00 a gallon is painful but there are a lot of good things that are going to come from it;our air is going to get cleaner and people are going to get healthier," says Medrano.

If you decide to bike to work experts suggest bringing clothes and toiletries to work on Monday so you have extra essentials already there, making your commute easier all week.
