Who will be the next men's basketball coach at Fresno state??? The New York Post is getting into the speculation. Running an article about St. John's possibly losing a key piece of their coaching staff. Stating assistant coach, Mike Dunlap would be a good match for the Bulldogs. Dunlap finished his first season as St. John's assistant, under Steve Lavin, with a (21–12) record and a NCAA tourney appearance. Before that, he spent time at Oregon, Arizona, two years in the NBA, he won two Division II tational titles. And one of the biggest things, that jumps out, as to why he may end up here, is his son, Spencer, is reportedly going to play basketball at Fresno City next year.
And check out these parallels...
Dunlap and Lavin just successfully went through what the next Fresno State head coach will have to go through, taking over a program from a coach that cleaned it up but didn't win enough. Norm Roberts, like Steve Cleveland, spent six seasons bringing his school back from a bad reputation, but could only manage one NIT tournament bid. Lavin and Dunlap took over and got the Johnnies back to the NCAA's with a (21–12) record, in the best conference there is, the Big East.
The goal for the next Fresno State head coach, whoever it may be, is not an easy one... balance. Keeping the integrity of the student athletes off the court, while winning on it.
