More than 100 Fresno dogs are officially on their way to Canada.
Puppies, from the Central California SPCA, are part of the "California Canine Cuties" transfer program, which is taking the pooches to Edmonton, Canada.
The idea came about due to a shortage of small dogs in Canada. Since there's an abundance of these types of dogs in the Central Valley, it made sense to send them to the region.
It was also helped along by an Edmonton businesswoman, who organized the pups to be flown via private jet to the Edmonton International Airport.
According to the Edmonton Humane Society, people are willing to wait for the California pups because they know that many of those sold in newspaper or online ads, or in pet stores may come from puppy mills or brokers where they often live in questionable conditions.
Volunteers here in the Central Valley, made sure the dogs were set to travel in style; they knit sweaters for the dogs to help keep them warm during their flight.
Since the program began, 250 California dogs have already found homes in Canada.
