No Link Found Between Birth Defects and Toxic Waste Plant in Kettleman City

Posted:

Kings County, CA-The California Department of Public Health says it does not see a link between birth defects and a toxic waste plant in Kettleman City.

The Kings County Board of Supervisors met Tuesday to receive the findings.

The Department of Public Health says there are no patterns in the cases over the past 22 years to suggest a common underlying cause for the birth defects in the city. They say the overall rate of birth defects for the area was not higher than expected.

Six birth defects have been reported in the area for babies born between September 2007 to November 2008. Of those, three of the children have died.

For years, residents have blamed the Chemical Waste Management dump site for contributing to the rising number of birth defects. The plant is the largest toxic waste landfill facility in California, employing around 500 people.

However the plant has maintained that its operations were safe.

The Department of Public Health says they will continue to monitor the area and continue the study. That information will be made public when it's available.
