More cuts are expected on Monday for the Fresno County Sheriff's Department.
Sheriff Margaret Mims says she will follow through with laying off 23 correctional officers, despite the action of County Supervisors on Friday.
Supervisors voted 4–1 to keep all the floors of the jail open, keep inmates inside and keep the jobs of all correctional officers.
The vote came on the heels of a $3.9 million budget deficit, which has led the Sheriff's Department to release over 1,000 inmates since early January.
Both the Correctional Officers Union and The Deputy Sheriff's Association have helped to bring down that deficit by agreeing to $1 million worth of cuts each. The correctional officers union even agreed to get rid of a "no layoff clause" they'd originally wanted in their $1 million concession.
However Mims said she couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be more lay-offs.
She brought her attorney with her to the meeting Friday, and is expected to file a lawsuit this week against Supervisors saying they have no right to tell her where to make cuts.
"They do not have the authority to determine how I use the budget that they've given me," Mims said on Friday.
