Vote Expected On Kettleman Plant Expansion

Posted:

Kings County Supervisors are expected to vote Tuesday morning on the expansion of a controversial hazardous waste landfill.

Chemical Waste Management is petitioning to expand the 1,600 acre site, near Kettleman City. Currently the plant is the largest toxic waste landfill facility in the California, employing around 500 people.

But families in the area say the site is hazardous to their health. The group, GreenAction, claimed they'd discovered a cluster of deadly child birth defects in the town, affecting babies born between September 2007 and November 2008.

Some Kings County leaders are petitioning the state for an investigation into the cluster of birth defects, including a cleft in their palate or lips.

Waste Management denies responsibility for birth defects.
