Man Arrested After Shooting At Parlier Officer

Posted:

A Parlier Police Officer is on routine leave, after man shot at him during a traffic stop early Monday morning.

The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. near Manning Avenue and Smith, an area between Reedley and Parlier.

Investigators say 30-year-old Jose Loya was pulled over for a vehicle check when he refused to cooperate with police by not providing his identification.

Loya was ordered out of his vehicle, and in the process, the officer saw him attempt to reach toward something in his waistband. The officer grabbed his own weapon and a struggle ensued.

During the struggle, Loya reached for his gun, firing it at the officer. The officer was not hit, but Loya used the moment to flee into a nearby orchard, thus causing the officer to fire at him.

A short while later, several more deputies and officers arrived on the scene and helped in the search for Loya.

He was later spotted near Manning and Lac Jac and taken into custody. Officers say Loya was never shot.

Loya has since been booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of attempted murder of a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, and weapons related charges including being a felon in possession of a handgun.

Officers also learned that Loya is a previously deported alien.
