Just before 8:30 p.m., Fresno police officers were called to the Usave Liquor Store at the corner of Tulare and Maple in Southeast Fresno to the report of an armed robbery and shooting.
Police say two armed men entered the liquor store and demanded money from the clerk. That's when police say the clerk pulled his own gun and shot one of the robbers, killing him.
Police say the second man got away.
Detectives have Tulare Avenue, between Backer and Maple, closed while they investigate.
No description of the second man has been released.
A business owner spoke to reporters after the shooting about the need for police to target armed robbers and arrest them before they can commit any more crimes. The man told KMPH News he had just come from a meeting where business owners met with police. He said "these things must be stopped at any cost."
