Valley residents came out, and gave back over the weekend at the "Fill the Mayflower" food drive in River Park.
Catholic Charities, which put on the weekend drive, reports that close to $18,000 in cash was raised and 34,000 lbs of food and clothes were collected.
This year's total surpasses last year's total of $10,000 and 20,000 lbs of food and clothes, a fact most surprising in this bleak economy.
The need was especially high this year with local food banks now servicing 15,000 people every two weeks, and unemployment rates hovering near 40% in the western cities of Fresno County.
In 2009 alone, Catholic Charities has distributed more than 1,000,000 pounds of food to needy families.
