Delhi Toddler Killed In Pit Bull Attack Identified

Posted:

Delhi, CA-A 17-month-old North Valley toddler, killed in a brutal pit bull attack, has been identified.

Merced officials have identified the child as Colton Smith of Delhi.

Smith was killed on Friday when his babysitter's 65 lb pit bull attacked him, grabbing him by the throat.

The dog only released the child after the babysitter stabbed him repeatedly with a fork. The child was then taken to Children's Hospital Central California where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff's Deputies say there are no plans to arrest the babysitter at this time. The case however will be sent to the D.A.'s office.

An autopsy is expected to be performed on Smith on Tuesday.  It is not known whether the dog will be euthanized.
