Coarsegold, CA- Madera County Sheriff's Deputies got the surprise of their life on Thursday upon discovering the contents of a suspicious package found in Coarsegold.
Deputies were called to an ATM machine off of Highway 41 in Coarsegold for reports of a suspicious box, which was tightly sealed with tape.
The box caused deputies to evacuate around 20 people from nearby businesses to ensure their safety.
Deputies then called in the bomb squad to open the device......and once the top came off deputies were surprised by the contents inside.
Out walked two small kittens....oblivious to all the commotion they caused.
Both kittens seemed unscathed by the events and were adopted immediately thereafter by a Coarsegold resident.
While Sheriff John Anderson admits there is a happy ending to this story, he says the incident itself is still a serious matter.
"When we receive calls about a suspicious package, we have to respond and go through the proper drill - take the appropriate steps for the safety of our citizens and our community."
The investigation into who left the box at the ATM machine is still under investigation. Deputies say they plan to review surveillance video to find the person who abandoned box.
