Kings County Planning Commissioners have approved the expansion of a hazardous waste landfill near Kettleman City.
The commission voted unanimously in a 4-0 vote to approve the expansion Monday night.
The vote allows Chemical Waste Management Inc to expand its plant by 11 acres. Currently the plant is the largest toxic waste landfill facility in the California, at 1,600 acres. It employs around 500 people.
Opponents have been vocal over the expansion. They want health workers to determine if the landfill played any role in birth defects in at least five newborns nearby.
The group GreenAction claimed they'd discovered a cluster of deadly child birth defects in the town, affecting babies born between September 2007 and November 2008.
Waste Management denies responsibility for birth defects.
