Shaver Lake, Calif. (KMPH News) - The Fresno County Sheriff's Department is stepping up patrols this Labor Day weekend, not only on valley roads, but also at our local lakes.
The Sierra Marina at Shaver Lake is booked, practically every boat rental will be out in the water by 10:00 am Saturday, workers said.
"This weekend we have about 24 people from Bakersfield coming up. We are looking forward to having a great time," Steven Everitt said.
To help secure everyone has a good time, the Fresno County Sheriff's Department has extra boat units assigned at all County water ways over the next three days.
Deputy Jody Flores hopes the visible presence will keep everyone alert and impaired boaters from taking the wheel and driving recklessly.
"A lot of the incidents we have had, alcohol has been a factor," said Deputy Flores.
Steve Everitt of Bakersfield is very familiar with the consequences of drinking and driving. He says three years ago an impaired boater nearly killed his friend's son. The little boy was playing in the water at the time.
"He ended up in the hospital. It was a very traumatic situation, about a year later they caught the guy," said Everitt.
Deputy Flore says the extra deputies are not out to spoil anyone's fun.
"We want people to come out and enjoy our water ways. We have beautiful areas, just be safe and responsible. If you are going to drink have someone else operate the boat for you," said Deputy Flores.
