Mixed emotions on Calif. gay marriage anniversary

Associated Press - June 17, 2009 1:24 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Gay rights supporters have commemorated the anniversary of the first same-sex weddings with a gathering in San Francisco.

About 50 people attended the event at the First Unitarian Universalist Society's church tonight.

Among those who spoke was Anne Marks, who married her same-sex partner last year. Marks said the happiness same-sex couples felt a year ago has faded because thousands of them are now being prevented from getting married.

California voters approved a gay marriage ban in November. And last month the Supreme Court upheld the ban while allowing the estimated 18,000 same-sex marriages that took place from June to November to stand.
