Valley residents gathered Friday morning for a "Walk of Remembrance" for the Armenian Genocide.
The walk was held to commemorate the 94th anniversary of the start of the Armenian Genocide.
"It's important for us to come together and talk about and recognize the events that took place," said Fresno State Student Hagop Ohanessian.
"We still await justice from the world, the United States of America and God," said Aram William Saroyan.
Many in attendance Friday were hoping to hear that President Obama would recognize the killings as a genocide. However in a brief statement Obama only referred to it as "1 of the greatest atrocities of the 20th century."
The walk started at the David of Sassoon Monument at Ventura and M street. Then, the crowd walked to city hall, for the annual flag raising ceremony.
A service to commemorate the anniversary will also be held Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Armenian Congregational Church in Fresno.
